Using SEO To Reveal Misogyny In The STEM Field

We Performed a Simple Keyword Research That Revealed How Women Are Sidelined In The Academia

Using SEO To Reveal Misogyny In The STEM Field

Jane Hu in her article questions why Einstein talked about his grandmother while saying the quote, “You do not truly understand something unless you can explain it to your grandma.” Is there an assumption that grandpas know more than grandmas?

This inspired us to do a little keyword research using SEMrush- this time not for any SEO purpose, but to find out whether the phrases “Explain to your mom” and “Explain To Your Grandma” occur more frequently than the phrases “Explain to your dad” and “Explain to your grandpa”.

What We Wanted To See

We just wanted to see whether the two phrases – “Explain To Your Mom” and “Explain To Your Dad” occur in an equal number across the web. We also wanted to see whether the other two phrases – “Explain To Your Grandma” and “Explain To Your Grandpa” also occur in an equal number or not.

Our Method

So we fired up SEMrush and clicked on the keyword overview menu. We entered the four phrases mentioned in the previous paragraph. And here are the results –

  • The phrase – “Explain to your mom” throws 40 million more search results than those thrown by the phrase “Explain to your dad.”

  • The phrase “Explain to your grandma” occurs twice more than the phrase ‘Explain to your grandpa.”

Interesting isn’t it? Does this not prove that somewhere in the subconscious, people still have a tendency to think that women are less intelligent than men. This gives birth to misogyny in the STEM field.

The Gender Bias Is More Apparent When It Comes To The Science and Technology Field

So we did a second keyword research to narrow down our search for misogyny in the STEM field

We tried to narrow down our search and wanted to see whether gender bias is more prominent in the STEM field as mentioned by Jane Hu in her article.

So we fired up SEMrush once more.

We chose the phrases –

  • “How to explain Blockchain to your mom” and
  • “How to explain Blockchain to your dad”

We compared these two keywords and here is the result –

Sexism in academia

The phrase “How to explain Blockchain to my mom” triggers 10 million more search results than what the phrase “How to explain Blockchain to my dad” triggers.

Now, here’s the mother of all gender biases (pun intended)-

We fired up SEMrush for the last time to compare the phrases “How to explain Blockchain to your grandma” and “How to explain Blockchain to your grandpa”. Here is the result –

Misogyny In The Stem Field

  • The phrase “How to explain Blockchain to your grandma” triggers 1.5 Million search results.

  • The phrase “How to explain Blockchain to your grandpa” triggers 98 search results. Freaking 98 only!

We thought SEMrush was experiencing some technical issue, so we replaced the word “grandpa” with “granddad”. But the result remained more or less the same.

Your grandpa is as less intelligent as your grandma. Maybe if the men in power did not block access to your grandma’s entry into the STEM world, you would not have to take the trouble of teaching your grandma. There’s too much garbage in front of the gate of science and tech.

Confirmation Bias In This Case Study

We at Dimensions Content Writing Services, encourage a healthy atmosphere of debate.

Our content head, Dipanwita Gupta did not agree with the reasoning presented by the author of this article. She says,” No matter how close kids are to their fathers, it’s the mothers(and grandmas) who they validate, confirm & cross check their gathered knowledge with. It’s the closeness between the mother and the kid or the grandmother and the kid that is reflected in the keyword research.”

We leave this upon you to decide whether the keyword research shown in this article reflects misogyny or just a pure bond between the grandma and her grandkid.
